Ignition Timing: Adjustments

NOTE: Vehicles from VIN 153560 on are equipped with Marelli digital ignition system. Timing is not adjustable. This procedure is for vehicles up to VIN 153559 with Lucas Constant Energy ignition.

1. Warm engine to operating temperature.
2. Hook up tachometer and timing light. Front right cylinder is #1A.
3. Pinch off vacuum advance hose with suitable clamping tool. This is much easier than disconnecting hose at distributor.
4. Raise engine speed to 3000 rpm and check timing. Timing scale is located beneath front of vehicle:

16° - 18° BTDC

5. To adjust, loosen lock nut and turn adjusting screw. Screw operates an eccentric which turns distributor.
6. Tighten lock nut and recheck.
7. Remove clamping tool from vacuum hose.
