XJ-S FUEL TANK RECALL R351

GROUP 1 & 3 VEHICLES

Model: XJ-S Date: APRIL, 1991

KEY POINTS: RECALL INFORMATION AND

REPAIR PROCEDURE

Jaguar Cars Exports Ltd. has determined that in all model variants of 1978 - 1991 XJ-S (excluding convertibles by Hess & Eisenhardt) the possibility exists that excessive fuel vapor pressure can develop. Pressure variations within the fuel tank which occur during normal running could weaken the structure of the fuel tank causing a fuel leak with the resultant possibility of a fire.

Any instances of fuel tank leakage discovered during the recall kit installation may be rectified following normal procedures and claimed as described under the "Warranty Information" section of this bulletin.

Affected VIN Range

1978 - 1991 XJ-S Coupe, Cabriolet, Convertible*

Overall VIN Range 54673 - 177467

*Factory convertibles only, Hess & Eisenhardt convertibles are not included in this recall campaign.

Due to changes in vehicle specification in terms of evaporative loss control, 5 different conditions exist within the overall range of vehicles that are to be recalled. The breakout of the 5 groups is as follows:

** Group 1 VIN's 54673 - 105337
Group 2 VIN's 105338 - 117338
** Group 3 VIN's 117339 - 133460
Group 4 VIN's 133461 - 137467
Group 5 3.6 Liter XJ-S (25 vehicles)

Separate repair, parts, and warranty claim procedure information for each group of vehicles will be issued to you via bulletin update as it becomes available.

Note: This bulletin issue contains repair, parts, and warranty claim procedure information for Group 1 and 3 vehicles only.

You may be required to perform recall campaign work on a vehicle that was not invoiced to your dealership (i.e., transient owner, etc.).

If this occurs, normal repair procedures should be followed.

OWNER NOTIFICATION (Group 1 and 3 Vehicles)

All owners on record will be issued recall notifications via first class mail commencing April 30, 1991. Included will also be a letter advising them of this condition. (A copy of the owner's letter is included with this mailing).

Owners will be asked to contact their selling dealer (or nearest authorized dealer) and make an appointment for repair work. They will also be asked to sign and return the "Campaign Claim" form to the dealer.

Note: A dealer should never refuse to perform, or delay, and open campaign repair on any vehicle due to the unavailability of a campaign claim form or other documentation.
