Upper Steering Column


1. Remove steering wheel as follows:
a. Loosen steering wheel adjuster and telescope steering wheel to extreme position.
b. Remove steering column lower shroud and blanking plate.
c. Remove steering column upper shroud and column retaining bolt.
d. Remove steering column pinch bolt, then the steering wheel assembly.
2. Remove adjustable clamp as follows:
a. Remove two locking screws securing horn pad to steering wheel.
b. Remove nylon nut from top of steering wheel shaft, along with horn contact tube.
c. Remove self locking nut and plain washer securing steering wheel to splined shaft.
d. Carefully remove steering wheel from splined shaft. Remove both halves of split cone.

e. Remove three screws securing U plate (3) to collet adapter (4) Fig. 3.
f. Remove collet adapter from lock ring collar.
g. Remove impact rubber (5) from steering wheel shaft.
h. Remove circlip (6) securing split collet (10) to steering wheel shaft. Remove collet. Fig. 3.
i. Check split collet for wear in splines. No radial movement should be evident between collet and splined shaft.

3. Remove instrument cluster as follows:
a. Remove center securing strip and screw from cluster (1). Fig. 4.
b. Remove screws securing side pieces of surround (2) and remove.
c. Pry off covers from securing screw apertures (3) and remove screws (4) securing instrument cluster to panel. Fig. 4.
d. Ease cluster forwards and disconnect harness block connectors.
e. Move cluster clear of instrument panel.
4. Remove screws securing ignition switch surround. Remove surround.
5. Disconnect ignition switch and electrical connectors.
6. Remove pinch bolts securing universal joint to upper and lower steering columns.
7. Disconnect horn electrical connectors from column.
8. Remove two setscrews securing lower end of column to mounting studs.
9. Release upper mounting bolts and remove all washers and spacers.
10. Support column by hand and remove lower mounting setscrews. Remove column.
11. Reverse procedure to install, noting the following:
a. Torque steering wheel to 25-31 ft. lbs.
b. Torque upper column strut to vertical strut to 8-10 ft. lbs.
c. Torque universal joint pinch bolts, upper column lower mounting to body, upper column to vertical strut, upper column vertical strut to bracket and upper column strut bracket to body to 14-17 ft. lbs.
