A/T - Gear Selector Cable Check/Adjust Procedure

KEYPOINTS: GEAR SELECTOR CABLE ADJUSTMENT
To check/adjust the transmission gear selector cable assembly on 1990 MY Sedan Range vehicles, the following procedure should be used:

^ Drive tbe vehicle onto a lift.

^ Open the center console armrest, remove the ashtray mounting screws and remove the ashtray.

^ Remove the sport mode switch from its surround and disconnect the harness, (fig. 1).

^ Remove the console veneer panel wing nuts. Remove the gear selector surround and veneer panel (do not lose the spacers).

^ Shift the gear selector to Neutral.

^ Loosen the gear selector cable rear adjustment locknut to the end of its thread. Loosen the front adjustment locknut to the end of its thread.

^ Raise the vehicle on the lift.

^ Working below the vehicle, loosen and remove the gear selector cable ball pin from the selector lever securing nut, (fig. 2).
^ Remove the ball pin from the selector lever.

^ Ensure that the gear selector lever is in Neutral.

^ Install the ball pin to the selector lever.

^ Install and tighten the securing nut.

^ Lower the lift.

^ Adjust the gear selector cable nuts so that the selector lever freely engages the Neutral position notch.

^ Tighten the rear locknut, ensuring that the tab washer engages in the bracket slots.

^ Install the veneer panel, ensuring that the spacers are positioned correctly. Install the gear selector surround.

^ Install the sport mode switch and ashtray.

^ Check/reset the rotary transmission switch adjustment (refer to section 44.15.37 of the 4.0 liter Sedan Range service manual.

Torque Specifications:

Cable bracket lower to transmission unit: 7-10 N-m
Control cable to gearbox lever: 8-12 N-m
Gear control cable to adjustable ball end: 40-50 N-m
