Propshaft Vibration Adjustment Procedure
MODEL 90-91 Sedan DATE 5/91
ISSUE:
Adjustment procedure for complaints of propshaft vibration at 30-50 mph on 90-91 MY sedans up to VIN 646879.
ACTION:
At VIN 646880, a newly designed propshaft has been introduced which eliminates the vibration condition identified above.
On 1990/1991 vehicles up to VIN 646879, the only way of improving propshaft vibration is through an adjustment procedure which is detailed below. Do not replace propshafts or other driveline components to correct propshaft vibration. Do not switch propshafts from one car to another.
Correct by adjusting:
^ Rear engine mounting.
^ Center bearing assembly.
^ Rotational orientation of the propshaft.
INITIAL CHECKS:
^ Road test (with the customer in the vehicle) to verify the complaint. Note road speed at which vibration occurs. Re-test by coasting in Neutral down through the noted speed range. If the vibration is still present, then the propshaft is the cause.
^ Centralize the engine on it's front mounts. Make sure that the transmission output flange is in the center of the propshaft tunnel.
^ Adjust the rear engine mounting crossmember to centralize the transmission mounting stud with the inspection hole in the crossmember.
^ Check all drive flange and drivetrain mounting bolts for proper torque.
FIG. 1:
^ Check which type of propshaft is installed, (fig. 1). (both are acceptable).
FIG. 2:
ADJUSTMENT PROCEDURES:
Propshaft Vertical Alignment Procedure:
^ Set both sections of the propshafts in line. Use spacers (CBC 3253/1 (1 mm), CBC 7252/2 (2 mm)) as required under the center bearing.
Propshaft Horizontal Alignment Procedure:
^ Use plumb lines attached to the propshaft, (Fig. 2).
^ Position plumb lines at each end of the propshaft, avoiding welds and balance weights.
^ Adjust the center mounting to give the following offsets:
- Type A - align 19 mm
- Type B - align 21 mm
Road test the vehicle to verify if the vibration has been eliminated.
If vibration at 30-50 mph still exists, proceed as follows:
^ Rotate the propshaft (relative to the axle) 1201 in either direction by disconnecting the Jurid joint from the axle flange. DO NOT remove the Jurid joint from the propshaft. Road test the vehicle for each position.
^ If there is still no improvement, rotate the propshaft 1801 in either direction relative to the transmission output flange by disconnecting the front joint. Road test the vehicle.
If vibration occurs when driving the vehicle away from a standstill, false the center bearing 3 mm and reset the horizontal alignment.
This procedure will not repair all complaints of propshaft vibration, but is the only repair possible at present.
SERVICE ADVISOR NOTE:
In the event that adjustment of the shaft does not make a sufficient improvement to satisfy the owner, take no further action at this point. Advise the owner that a fix will become available and make a note of the owner's name so that he can be contacted in the future.
It is anticipated that a supply of the revised new propshafts will become available and it is possible to fit this shaft to any 1990 or 1991 Sedan. This action will correct the problem.
You will be notified when the new design propshaft becomes available.
