Alternator Drive Belt - Tension Adjustment

ISSUE:

Alternator drive belt tension information in Sedan and XJS Range service manuals has been superseded.

ACTION:

When adjusting alternator belt tension, use the following updated information:

Revised Tension Specification:

Condition Sedan XJS

New belt 138 lbs. 79 lbs.
Used belt 115 lbs. 70 lbs.

Procedure:

1. Raise vehicle on a lift.





2. From above, check belt tension using a belt tension gauge, fig. 1 (refer to Special Tools Information).

3. Remove the gauge.

4. If necessary, adjust the belt and check the tension.

5. Repeat the procedure until the tension is correct.

6. Remove the gauge and make sure that all fasteners are tight.

7. Lower the vehicle.
