PAS/Ride Levelling - Adding PS Fluid by Mistake

POWER STEERING
No: 4
Model: 90 My SEDAN RANGE Date: APRIL, 1990
KEY POINTS: INADVERTENTLY ADDING POWER STEERING FLUID TO PAS/RIDE LEVELLING RESERVOIR
Beginning with the 1990 MY Sedan Range vehicles use Castrol HSMO for both the power steering and ride levelling system.
NOTE: Sovereign, VDP, and Majestic vehicles incorporate a common reservoir for the power steering and ride levelling system.
If power steering fluid is added to the reservoir by mistake, the seals in either the power steering rack or ride levelling system will not be damaged.* If this does occur, however, the system must be drained and flushed out completely using the following procedure:
NOTE: This draining/bleeding procedure should be performed three times.
^ Drain the reservoir.
^ Bleed both rear struts without running the engine. (This does not apply to base model XJ6 vehicles).
^ Disconnect both power steering hoses at the steering rack and allow the system to drain.
^ Refill system with Castrol HSMO Fluid and run engine to circulate fluid.
* In cold weather PAS fluid becomes too viscous and will affect the performance of the rear suspension struts.
