Automatic Transmission/Transaxle: Service and Repair


1. Disconnect battery ground cable.
2. Remove bolt securing dipstick tube to manifold.
3. Remove nuts securing manifold to cylinder head.
4. Remove rear support bracket and strap assembly from manifold studs.
5. Install engine lifting eye tool No. 18G-1465 or equivalent, to manifold rear studs.
6. Install engine support tool No. MS-53B or equivalent, across inner fender aprons. Adjust support hook nut to support weight of engine.
7. Raise and support vehicle, then drain transmission pan and remove front exhaust pipe.
8. Support transmission with jack and remove rear transmission mount bolts.
9. Separate driveshaft from drive flange.
10. Remove rotary switch guard, then loosen switch securing nuts and disconnect from selector shaft.
11. Remove selector cable ball joint securing nut and disconnect ball pin from shift lever.
12. Rotate collar to remove rotary switch harness plug from transmission case socket.
13. Remove dipstick, then disconnect union and drain remaining transmission fluid.
14. Remove and plug dipstick tube assembly. Disconnect and plug transmission cooler lines.

15. Remove converter housing shield (2) and lower housing rubber plug (1), Fig. 4.
16. Rotate crank to align converter bolts in housing access hole. Remove six converter bolts and separate converter from driveplate.
17. Remove fan cowl from radiator, then lower rear of transmission by releasing suspension nut on engine support tool No. MS53B or equivalent. Do not allow engine to damage steering gear.
18. Remove foam insulation pad, then disconnect ground lead.
19. Remove eight converter housing bolts from intermediate plate, leaving two upper bolts in position to retain transmission.
20. Support transmission with jack. Secure transmission to jack following manufacturer's instructions.
21. Remove two remaining converter housing bolts. Lower transmission from engine.
22. Reverse procedure to install. Tighten to specifications.
