Antitheft and Alarm Systems: Service and Repair
START-UP PROCEDURES PRIOR TO RETAIL SALE** Adapted from Service Bulletin 8676 - Dated 08/90 **
The following information applies to vehicles incorporating 19000 code alarms with the battery isolation device installed or the battery disconnected:
If a vehicle equipped with an alarm system (and with the battery isolation device in use) is left in dealer stock for more than two weeks prior to retail sale, the alarm should be left in the valet mode.
Caution: In this condition the back-up battery will discharge in 3-4 days, causing the alarm system memory to be lost. In addition, when the ignition is switched to "start", the alarm system start inhibit may be active, which will prevent the starter motor from operating.
If this condition occurs, hold the ignition in the "start" position for 5 seconds to enable the starter to operate. If this fails to start the vehicle, repeat the procedure.
The back-up battery will recharge from the vehicles main battery, which will be charged from the vehicle charging system.
The alarm system must also be recoded by pressing both the remote transmitter buttons a total of five times for both units.
This no-start condition will not occur when the battery isolation device is removed. To keep the battery at a good state of charge, the isolation device should not be removed until 24 hrs. prior to vehicle retail sale.
NOTE: Alarm system components should not be replaced until both the vehicle battery and alarm back-up battery have reached a fully charged condition. Also, an alarm system diagnostic procedure should be performed to determine the cause of the fault.
For additional alarm system information, refer to the Installation and Operation Manual provided with the alarm system kit.
