ENGINE MOUNTING BRACKET SECTION: 12
No: 16

Model: 1990 MY XJ-S Date: DECEMBER, 1989

KEY POINTS: INCORRECTLY ASSEMBLED ENGINE
MOUNTING BRACKET
Several XJ-S vehicles within VIN range 166873-167279 (engine numbers 8S72418-8S72771) incorporate an incorrectly assembled left-hand side engine mounting bracket. A spacer has been installed on the wrong side of the mounting bracket top bolt, which can result in uneven clamping of the bracket.

For vehicle inspection/repair, use the following procedure:

Inspection:

^ From underneath the vehicle, check the left-hand side engine mounting bracket top bolt.

FIG. 1:

^ If a spacer exists between the engine mounting bracket and the oil cooler pipe securing bracket (Fig. 1), the mounting bracket is correctly assembled and no repair is necessary.

^ If the spacer is between the cylinder block and the engine mounting bracket, the spacer must be repositioned as follows:

Repair Procedure:

^ Open hood and disconnect the multi plug from the air temperature sensor on the left-hand air cleaner. Release the clips securing the air cleaner box to the backplate. Remove the air cleaner element and air box.

^ Remove the front nut securing the left-hand exhaust down pipe heat shield.

^ Remove the bolts securing the power steering cooler assembly to the crossbeam.

^ Install and position the engine support tool (MS53A) lifting hook to the left-hand front engine lifting eye. Install the engine support tool over the support hook and align in the fender channels.

From underneath the vehicle:

^ Remove the screws and clips securing the power steering rack high pressure hose to the crossbeam.
^ Reposition the cooler pipe/hose towards the left-hand suspension tie down bracket, and secure to the tie down bracket using wire.

^ Reposition the power steering cooler assembly to gain access to the engine mounting bracket.

^ Remove the sump bolt securing the engine ground strap.

^ Remove the bolts securing the left-hand rack gaiter/pinion heatshield to the steering rack assembly. Remove the heatshield.

^ Remove the rear nut securing the left-hand exhaust downpipe heatshield.

From above the vehicle:

^ Reposition the left-hand exhaust downpipe heatshield to gain access to the engine mounting rear securing bolt.

^ Remove the nut securing the left-hand rubber mounting to the engine mounting bracket.

^ Tighten the lifting hook wing nut to raise the left-hand side of the engine to just clear the rubber mountings.

^ Loosen the left-hand engine mounting bracket rear securing bolt.

From underneath the vehicle:

^ Loosen the left-hand engine mounting bracket front lower securing bolt.

^ Remove the mounting upper securing bolt (which also secures the oil cooler pipe support bracket). Retrieve the spacer installed between the cylinder block and the left-hand engine mounting bracket.

^ Reinstall the spacer between the oil cooler pipe support bracket and the outer face of the engine mounting bracket, (fig. 1).

^ Tighten the left-hand engine mounting upper and lower front bolts.

From above the vehicle:

^ Tighten the left-hand engine mounting bracket rear securing bolt.

^ Loosen the wing nut on the support hook of the tool, (MS53A), to lower the engine and to enable the support to be removed.
^ Reinstall the nut securing the left-hand rubber mounting to the engine mounting bracket.

^ Reinstall the left-hand exhaust downpipe heatshield to the manifold front mounting stud. Install (but do not fully tighten) the downpipe heatshield front mounting nut.

From underneath the vehicle:

^ Reposition the power steering cooler assembly and install/ tighten the securing bolts.

^ Untie and reinstall the power steering cooler/hose assembly to the crossbeam. Secure using the pipe clips and setscrews.

^ Reinstall the sump bolt securing the engine ground strap.

^ Reposition the left-hand exhaust downpipe heatshield to manifold rear mounting stud and secure with the nut.

^ Reinstall the left-hand power steering rack gaiter/pinion heatshield and secure with the bolts.

From above the vehicle:

^ Fully tighten the left-hand downpipe heatshield front securing nut.

^ Reinstall the air cleaner element/box to the backplate and reconnect the multi plug to the air temperature sensor.
