Starting System: Description and Operation

The Starter circuit supplies battery voltage to the starter motor when the ignition switch is set to the START position. The circuit utilizes a starter solenoid and relay.
When energized, the starter relay connects battery power to the starter solenoid containing pull-in and hold-on coils. The pull-in coil is grounded through the starter motor windings and the electrical current passing through the motor is sufficient to turn the armature. When closed, the solenoid contacts connect full battery power to the starter motor and the armature rotates at full power.
