VCM FUEL FAIL CODE 69

Model: 90 - 91 SEDANS Date: APRIL, 1991

KEY POINTS: DIAGNOSIS AND REPAIR PROCEDURE

ISSUE:

Unnecessary replacement of engine management ECU due to fuel fail code 69.

Fuel Fail code 69 may be activated when the ignition is switched quickly from "Off" to "Start". Battery voltage lowers during cranking which causes a delayed park/neutral signal from the decoder module to the ECU which may then activate code 69.

ACTION:

A new decoder module (DBC 10060) was introduced at VIN 654843 (start of 1991 MY).

If code 69 is displayed on any vehicle, check the following:

^ Battery voltage and connections. Check the battery using the Battery Test Sheet (W 18) if necessary.

^ Gearshift cable adjustment. Refer to Technical Bulletin section 44, number 10.

^ Rotary switch position.
^ Pin connections at:
- Harness connector LI45.
- Rotary Switch connector GB1.
- Decoder Module connector GB6.
- Engine Management ECU LI59.

^ Erase code 69 using JDS or by disconnecting the battery.

^ Start the engine several times. On each start, pause momentarily with the ignition in the "On" position before cranking.

^ Road test the vehicle. To verify all testing conditions of code 69, the engine speed must exceed 3500 rpm under acceleration.

If code 69 does not recur, no further action is necessary.

If code 69 does recur, perform a JDS Fault Diagnosis/Engine Management test.

NOTE: If code 69 is displayed on a vehicle up to VIN 654843 and no faults are found, advise the customer that CHECK ENGINE warnings on start up can be prevented by pausing for one second with the ignition "On" before cranking.
