Rear Suspension, Hub Assembly




Hub Assembly

- Remove the rear road wheel.
- Slacken off but DO NOT REMOVE the drive shaft securing nut.
- Displace and remove the handbrake cable to the expander securing clip.
- Reposition the cable from the lever.
- Cut and remove the caliper securing bolts locking wire.



- Cut and remove the brake pad harness to the hub securing clips.
- Remove the caliper securing bolts.
- Reposition the caliper from the disc and secure to the bump stop.
- Reposition the disc access hole to the handbrake adjuster and release.
- Remove the disc securing screw.
- Displace and remove the disc.
- Remove the fulcrum shaft securing nut.
- Finally, remove the drive shaft to the hub securing nut and displace and remove the cone.



- Slacken the tool centre bolt and fit the thread protector to the drive shaft.



- Fit and align tool JD 1D to the hub.
- Fit and tighten the securing nuts.
- Carefully tighten the centre bolt to withdraw the hub from the drive shaft.
- Remove the tool securing nuts.
- Remove tool JD 1D.
- Remove the thread protector.
- Carefully displace and remove the fulcrum shaft and displace and remove the hub assembly.
- Fit and align the hub assembly to a vice.
- Using a suitable drift, displace the fulcrum bearing tube.
- Displace and remove the shim and bearing from the tube.
- Displace and remove the remaining bearing and shim from the hub carrier.



- Fit and align the extractor tool 1 8G 284 AAH (1) to the fulcrum bearing race.
- Tighten the tool cross bolt, ensuring that the tool legs locate behind the bearing race.
- Fit and tighten the slide hammer 1 8G 284 to the tool.
- Using a slide hammer displace and remove the bearing race.
- Slacken but DO NOT REMOVE the tool cross bolt.
- Place the bearing race aside.
- Repeat the above procedure for the remaining bearing race.
- Fit and align extractor tool 1 8G 284 AAH to the fulcrum bearing race.
- Using a slide hammer displace and remove the bearing race.
- Slacken but DO NOT REMOVE the tool cross bolt.
- Place the bearing race aside.
- Remove the slide hammer from the tool, place slide hammer and tool aside and open the vice.
- Remove the hub assembly and clean hub carrier fulcrum bearing faces.
- Clean the cross shaft and tube.
- Position the hub assembly to the press.
- Fit and seat the bearing race replacer tool JD 5506
- Fit a new bearing race to the replacer tool.



- Fit and align the tool/race to the hub assembly and using a press fully seat bearing race to the hub.
- Remove the replacer tool.
- Reposition the hub assembly in the press.
- Fit the new bearing race to the replacer tool.
- Fit and align the tool/race to the hub assembly.
- Using the press, fully seat the bearing race to the hub.
- Fit and align the hub assembly to the vice and tighten.
- Apply grease to the bearings and fit new bearing to the fulcrum tube.
- Fit minimum thickness of shim to the fulcrum tube bearing.
- Fit and align tube/bearing assembly to the hub carrier.
- Fit and align the remaining bearing to the tube/hub.
- Fit and align the fulcrum shaft.
- Fit and fully seat the remaining shim to the tube.
- Fit a suitable piece of tube to seat onto the shim.
- Fit and tighten the cross shaft securing nut to fully seat shim onto the cross tube.
- Remove the shaft securing nut.
- Remove the tube.
- Fit a suitable flat washer to the shaft, fit and tighten the shaft securing nut.
- Using feelers, measure and note the gap between the shim and the washer.
- Remove the shaft securing nut.
- Remove the washer and displace the cross shaft.
- Using suitable drift displace the cross tube from the shims.
- Retrieve shims and measure, placing aside. Select new shims and measure.

NOTE equal size shims to be used to give 0.003" pre-load.

- Fit new shims to the cross tube.
- Fit and align the cross shaft.
- Fit and align suitable tube.
- Tighten the shaft securing nut to fully seat shims onto cross tube.
- Undo and remove the nut - remove tube.
- Carefully displace the cross shaft from the tube.
- Open the vice, removing the hub assembly.
- Reverse the remaining removal procedure to refit.

TORQUE FIGURES
- Brake disc to hub 11-16 Nm
- Caliper to carrier 55-62 Nm
- Fulcrum shaft nut 70-80 Nm
- Halfshaft to hub 300-320 Nm
- Wheel nut to wheel stud (STEEL WHEEL) 65-85 Nm
- Wheel nut to wheel stud (ALLOY WHEEL) 88-102 Nm
