A/C Control Panel - Intermittently Inoperative
MODEL 88 - 91 MY Sedan Range DATE 10/91
ISSUE:
Intermittent failure of A/C to operate when the mode switch is turned ON.
ACTION:
Test the A/C control panel internal micro switch for high resistance or excessive voltage drop using the following procedure:
1. Remove the center console ash tray, gear selector surround, and ski slope.
2. Remove the six screws securing the radio/A/C control panel to the center console. Withdraw the assembly and remove the radio.
3. Locate AC-1 Yellow PMHD at the lower left corner of the radio aperture. Disconnect the control panel from the bulkhead harness.
4. Turn the control panel mode switch to LOW.
5. Use a digital volt-ohm meter (set to ohms) to probe between AC-1-7 (S/U) and AC-1-8 (O/B) on thc control panel side of AC-1. Operate the mode switch from LOW to OFF and back several times. Maximum reading should not exceed 0.5 ohms in the LOW position. Remove the probes from AC-1.
6. Turn the control panel mode switch to OFF, and reconnect AC-1 to the bulkhead harness.
7. Turn the ignition ON to position 3, and the control panel mode switch to DEFROST.
8. Set the volt-ohm meter to volts and probe between AC-1-7 (S/U) and AC-1-8 (O/B) on the control panel side of AC-1. Operate the mode switch from DEFROST to OFF and back several times. Maximum reading should not exceed 0.115 volts in the DEFROST position.
If either reading exceeds the specifications quoted above, the control panel is faulty and must be replaced.
