SECTION: 66

RIDE LEVEL SYSTEM REPAIRS
Model: SEDAN RANGE Date: APRIL, 1991
KEY POINTS: MISDIAGNOSIS OF PREVIOUSLY UNNOTICED FAULTS
ISSUE:
Installation of the "charge cycle" ride level sensor (DBC 6768 or DBC 6170) can reveal previously unnoticed system faults. These faults are often misdiagnosed resulting in unnecessary replacement of ride levelling system components.
ACTION:
When diagnosing any ride level system complaint, perform the following operation:
^ Check that a "charge cycle" ride level sensor is installed. If not, install only the components indicated in Technical Bulletin section 66, No. 13.
^ Activate the system manually. Refer to Technical Bulletin section 66, No. 7.
^ If the system does NOT activate. refer to the tests included in the XJ6 Power Hydraulic System Technical Guide.
^ If the system does activate, switch the engine off and continue as follows:
^ Start the engine and leave idling. After 40 seconds, the rear suspension should rise 3/8" and then lower.
^ If the suspension rises 1" or more, replace both rear struts.
^ If there is a "moan" noise 45 seconds after starting, replace the down solenoid valve. Refer to Technical Bulletin section 66, No. 9.
^ Roadtest the vehicle. If suspension knock exists, check for loose wheel hub bearings, subframe to body interference, etc. If necessary, perform tests in the XJ6 Power Hydraulic System Technical Guide.
NOTE: If a solenoid valve fault is identified:
^ DO NOT change the valve block assembly. Replace ONLY the defective valve.
^ Always install new solenoid valve "O" rings. Do not re-use.
^ DO NOT cut electrical leads from removed solenoid valves; all leads must remain intact for test purposes.
