WIND NOISE

KEY POINTS: WIND NOISE CAUSED BY DOOR MIRRORS


ISSUE:

Wind noise caused by door mounted rear view mirrors.

ACTION:

A revised mirror assembly incorporating a new housing and sealing gasket was introduced at VIN 594993. To eliminate wind noise on pre-VIN 594933 vehicles, use the following procedure:


NOTE: The following procedure should be performed with the mirror assemblies on the vehicle.

FIG. 1:

^ Remove the mirror glass by inserting a plastic lever between the glass and the mirror housing, (Fig. 1).


CAUTION: To avoid damaging the mirror motor assembly, do not insert the plastic lever more than 4 mm when changing the glass.

FIG. 2:

^ Pry the mirror glass from its mounting. Disconnect the two electrical connections, (fig. 2). Store the mirror glass in safe place.

^ Using a small screw driver, release the chrome finisher mounting clips, (fig. 3). Pry the finisher free so that it is separate from the other components, (fig. 4).

^ Inspect the self adhesive foam gasket. The gasket should be correctly positioned between the finisher and the housing as indicated in fig. 5.

FIG. 6:

^ If gaps between the finisher and the housing exist, apply a bead of polyurethane adhesive to the inner surface the finisher, (fig. 6).

FIG. 7:

^ Before installing the chrome finisher, install new spring retaining clips (JLM 2235).

^ Install the chrome finisher onto the mirror housing, making sure that the finisher is correctly seated and flush to the mirror housing, (fig. 7 A & B). Remove any excess adhesive using a soft dry cloth.


^ Install the mirror glass into the housing and check operation. Allow adhesive to dry for 1 hour.

^ Road test vehicle and check for wind noise.

Adhesive Information:

Polyurethane (P.U.) adhesive, suggested manufacturer GE. Part Number 08031 (tubes).
