Steering - Hydraulic Noise When Turning the Wheel
57-16Steering - PAS Rack - Noise -
Rebuild/Replace
MODEL:
Sedan Range
DATE:
9/92
ISSUE:
Hydraulic noise when turning the steering wheel 10~ to the left or right of the "straight ahead" position, especially at low speeds.
NOTE:
This noise should not be confused with the noise from the pressure relief valve when the steering wheel is held in the full lock position.
ACTION:
At VIN 660570 (steering rack date code 1K 1368) energized sealing rings were introduced which corrected the hydraulic noise problem. For noisy racks dated earlier than 1K 1368, perform the following:
^ Confirm that the P.A.S. system noise is a hydraulic noise, not noise from the pressure relief valve or from the system oil level being low.
^ Check the date code on the P.A.S. rack, (Fig. 1). If the date code is earlier than 9G 1673, replace the rack. If the date falls between 9G 1673 and 1K 1367, rebuild the rack as detailed in Technical Bulletin 57-14.
