H & E Converlible Top - Premature Fabric Wear

ISSUE:

H & E convertible top fabric wear due to the fabric interfering with the top frame linkage or the body chrome belt molding.


ACTION:





If external fabric wear exists due to the fabric rubbing on the chrome belt moldings (Fig. 1, area A), refer to Hess & Eisenhardt Technical Bulletin 6-7-12.





If the interior pad is ripped or worn from contact with the top linkage rod (Fig. 2 area A), repair as follows:

1. Raise the convertible top until the linkage rod is accessible.

2. Using course sandpaper or a file, remove any sharp edges from the front or rear of the linkage rod.

3. Replace the interior trim pad if necessary.


If the top fabric has worn through due to contact with the linkage rod or chrome belt molding, replace the top using the following procedure:

1. Remove the 9 chrome luggage rack mounting screws.

2. Peel away carpeting (secured by velcro strip).

3. Remove the 11 trim panel mounting screws.

4. Remove the top and bottom bolts securing the seat belt supports.

5. Move the trim panel forward.

6. Unplug radio speakers and courtesy lights. Remove trim panel.

7. Disconnect rear window heater wiring harness.

8. Disconnect hydraulic system from convertible top frame.


NOTE: The securing bolt must be replaced exactly as it was removed (nut side towards the interior of the vehicle). Do not lose the white plastic bushing on the top loop of the hydraulic piston.


9. Remove the 5 bolts holding each side of the top frame to the body.


NOTE: To protect the paint and chrome molding, apply tape to the molding and a protective cover to the rear of the vehicle.

10. Remove the top from the vehicle.

To install the new top on the vehicle, reverse the above procedure.

After installation, make sure that the top does not interfere with the linkage rod as detailed in Fig. 2, area A.
