Repair Procedure

Replace Ignition High Tension Leads/inspect 4A Injector Hose

^ Disconnect the low tension harness multi-plug from the "B" bank (upper) ignition coil.
^ Remove the "B" bank high tension lead from the coil and distributor.
^ Remove the four screws securing the "B" bank coil to its mounting bracket and remove the coil.
^ Remove the "A" bank high tension lead from the coil and distributor.
^ Check the 4A injector hose - fourth injector from front on right side bank) for cracking or splitting of the exterior surface of the hose.

NOTE:
If the 4A injector hose is in good condition with no signs of cracking or splitting, DO NOT replace the 4A injector. Complete "REPLACE IGNITION LEADS" procedure only.

NOTE:
If the 4A injector hose is cracked or split, complete "REPLACE IGNITION LEADS", then proceed to the "REPLACE 4A INJECTOR AND HOSE" procedure.

^ Install the new "A" bank high tension lead (red tag) to the distributor and the "A" bank ignition coil. Make sure both ends are pushed completely in place.
^ Install the "B" bank coil and secure with four screws.
^ Connect the low tension harness multi-plug to the "B" bank coil.
^ Install the straight end of the new "B" bank high tension lead (yellow tag) to the distributor. Make sure that it is pushed completely in place.
^ Connect the "B" bank high tension lead to the "B" bank coil. Make sure that it is pushed completely in place and that the high tension lead is routed outside the low tension wires, (Fig. 1).

NOTE:
If the previously inspected injector hose is in good condition with no signs of cracking or splitting, DO NOT replace the injector.

NOTE:
If the previously inspected injector hose is cracked or split, proceed to the "REPLACE 4A INJECTOR AND HOSE" procedure.

Replace 4A Injector Hose

CAUTION:
The following operations involve the removal of fuel system components and will result in the presence of fuel vapor which is extremely flammable. All necessary safety precautions must be taken.

^ Open the trunk and remove the right side trim panel. Remove the fuel pump relay (silver relay on black base).
^ Crank the engine to depressurize the fuel system.
^ Disconnect the battery.
^ Disconnect the throttle rods from the throttle pedestal and remove the throttle rods from the bellcrank levers.
^ Disconnect the part load breather pipe (PLBP) hoses from the manifold stub pipes.
^ Cut and remove the ratchet tie straps securing the harness to the PLBP.
^ Loosen the hose clamp securing the PLBP to the "T" piece and remove the PL3P.
^ Note the position of the electrical connector at the kickdown switch and disconnect.
^ Disconnect the throttle inner cable from the throttle pedestal pulley.
^ Loosen the lock nut securing the throttle cable to the mounting bracket and remove the cable from its mounting.
^ Note the position of the electrical connectors on the fuel rail temperature switch (if installed) and disconnect.
^ Loosen and remove the vacuum valve from the fuel rail.
^ Disconnect the harness multi-plugs from the air and water temperature sensors. Position the harness under the fuel rail.
^ Place a rag below the fuel feed hose to fuel rail union and loosen the union nut.
^ Position the fuel feed hose away from the fuel rail. Install blanking plugs to the ends of the fuel feed hose and the fuel rail to prevent dirt ingress.
^ Remove the screw securing the fuel return pipe/hose assembly to the manifold mounting bracket.
^ Place a rag below the fuel return pipe to pressure regulator union and loosen the union nut.
^ Position the return hose/pipe assembly away from the pressure regulator. Install a blanking plug to the pressure regulator to prevent dirt ingress.
^ Loosen the union nut securing the return pipe/hose assembly to the fuel rail and remove the pipe/hose assembly. Install blanking plugs to the pipe/hose assembly and fuel rail ends to prevent dirt ingress.
^ Disconnect the harness multi-plugs from the injectors.
^ Remove the nuts securing the injector clamp plates to the inlet manifold.
^ Remove the front injectors from the inlet manifold.
^ Remove the injector/fuel rail assembly and place on a workbench.
^ Remove and discard all 12 lower mounting rings (Fig. 2 F) from the inlet manifold.
^ Remove the blanking plugs from the fuel rail feed and return unions and carefully drain the fuel from the rail into a waste container.
^ Install the blanking plugs to the fuel rail unions.
^ Using a soldering iron at the top of the 4A injector hose, burn through the hose until it is possible to remove the hose and injector assembly from the rail (Fig. 2).

CAUTION:
DO NOT use a knife or other sharp implement to cut the injector hose or the fuel rail stub pipe can be damaged and result in fuel leakage.

^ Note the position of the 4A injector clamp plate (Fig. 2 C) and harness connector and remove the injector (Fig. 2 B). Remove the clamp plate (Fig. 2 C), upper mounting ring (Fig. 2 E) and collar (Fig. 2 D) from the injector. Hold the injector/hose assembly for return to Jaguar Cars Inc.
^ Position the new hose sleeve (Fig. 2 A) and clamp plate (Fig. 2 C) over the fuel rail stub. Make sure that the c%amp plate is in the correct position.
^ Install collar (Fig. 2 D) and new upper mounting ring (Fig. 2 E) to the new injector.
^ Install Service Tool JD 116 to the replacement injector and hose assembly.
^ Make sure that the hose sleeve (Fig. 2 A) and the harness connector are correctly positioned. Push the injector assembly fully into place on the fuel rail stub.
^ Install 12 new lower mounting rings (Fig. 2 F) to the inlet manifold.
^ Install the fuel rail using the removal procedure in reverse. Check throttle for correct operation.
^ Pressurize the fuel system and check fuel hoses and connections for leaks. Repair if necessary.
^ Run the engine and check operation.
^ Adhere a completed (Zone and Dealer numbers) R374 Campaign Completion Identification Label to the plate at the top of the firewall in the engine compartment (next to the body number stamping).
