Upper Steering Column


1. Remove steering wheel as follows:
a. Disarm airbag as described under MAINTENANCE PROCEDURE/AIRBAG SYSTEM DISARMING.
b. Remove steering wheel securing nut.
c. Mark position of steering wheel, then remove from column.
2. Tilt steering column to top position, then remove ignition lock shield.
3. Remove lower steering column cowl.
4. Remove upper steering column cowl securing screws, then lower column to lowest position and remove upper cowl.

5. Turn fastener securing driver's side dash panel 90°, Fig. 5. Pull top of dash liner down and remove fastener.
6. Remove nut and release clip securing bottom of liner, then disconnect liner from rail and remove from vehicle.
7. Remove driver's side footwell carpet.

8. Remove throttle cable retaining cotter pin (1), Fig. 6. Disconnect throttle cable.
9. Remove throttle pedal pivot clips (2), Fig. 6.
10. Remove pivot, then remove throttle pedal assembly.
11. Remove throttle pedal mounting plate, then remove nut and bolt securing steering column to knuckle joint.
12. Disconnect column electrical connectors, then remove column securing nuts.
13. Remove column and spacers.
14. Reverse procedure to install, noting the following:
a. Torque steering wheel to shaft nut to 26-33 ft. lbs.
b. Torque upper column securing nuts to 7-9 ft. lbs.
c. Torque lower column securing nuts to 15-19 ft. lbs.
d. Torque universal joint pinch bolt to 18-22 ft. lbs.
