Flex Plate: Service and Repair
Remove
- Disconnect the kickdown cable from the throttle linkage.
- Remove the bolt securing the transmission dipstick tube to the inlet manifold.
Engine Support Tool:
- Fit Service Tool 18G 1465 to the rear of the inlet manifold and take the weight of the engine with MS53B.
- Place drain tin below the transmission, drain the fluid.
- Disconnect the exhaust front pipe.
Rear Engine / Transmission Mount:
- Taking the weight of the transmission unit, remove the rear mounting to body securing bolts, lower the jack and collet the spacer.
- Disconnect the propeller shaft from the drive flange.
Transmission Selector Cable & Switch:
- Remove the rotary transmission switch/cable assembly/harness (1,2) complete. Reposition the switch assembly away from the work area.
- Remove the selector cable bracket clamp.
- Place a drain tin below the dipstick tube, and disconnect the union, drain the remaining fluid and fit a dummy plug to the sump.
- Remove the clamp securing the transmission cooling pipes to the transmission, disconnect the pipes and fit a dummy plug to the apertures.
Torque Converter Bolts:
- Remove the blanking plug from the torque converters securing bolt access aperture (1), and remove the crankshaft/drive plate securing bolts, turning the crankshaft for access to remove each bolt.
- Lower the engine/transmission unit using MS53B ensuring that the engine does not foul the steering rack.
Bell Housing Bolts:
- Remove the bell housing bolts and remove the transmission (1).
Flex Plate Bolts:
- Remove the drive plate securing bolts (1).
- Remove the drive plate (2).
Refit
- Check the crankshaft rear oil seal for leaking, replace as necessary.
- Fit the replacement drive plate to the crankshaft.
- Lift the transmission unit into position, fit and tighten the bell housing bolts.
- Fit torque converter bolts but DO NOT tighten until ALL have been started.
- Refit the blanking plug and stone guard.
- Refit the oil cooler pipes to the transmission ensuring new sealing washers are used, secure with the sump bracket.
- Reposition the kickdown cable to the bell housing and refit the dipstick tube.
- Raise the engine/transmission unit using MS53 B.
- Refit the rotary transmission switch/cable/harness assembly to the selector shaft.
- Fit but do not tighten the securing nuts.
- Ensure that the selector lever is in neutral.
Selector Switch:
- Adjust the switch to enable Service Tool JD 161 to be fitted, thus aligning the selector shaft and switch.
- Torque tighten the switch securing bolts. Remove the tool.
- Refit the propeller shaft to the drive flange, raise the rear of the unit into position fit the spacers and secure with the mounting bolts.
- Refit the exhaust front pipe to the intermediate pipe and manifold.
- Remove Service Tool MS53B align the fan cowl, refit and adjust the kickdown cable.
- Remove the engine lifting eye 18G 1465 and replace the manifold securing nuts.
- Align and secure the dipstick tubes to the inlet manifold.
- Refill transmission.
