Rattles/Squeaks - Repair

ISSUE:

Squeaks and rattles from the upper steering column cowl on XJS and Sedan Range vehicles.

ACTION:

Modify the upper cowl using the following procedure for both XJS and Sedan Range vehicles:

^ Remove the lower steering column cowl using Repair Operation 76.46.03 in the XJS or Sedan Range Repair Manual.

^ Remove the upper steering column cowl using Repair Operation 76.46.02. (Note the ground lead on the right side attaching screw on 1992 MY XJS vehicles)

^ Partially install upper half cowl screws into the brass threaded inserts.

^ Support cowl on bench. Tap on screw heads with a hammer until the brass inserts located in the upright are driven 1/8" below the flush surface.

^ File off the plastic upright until it is smooth with the new position of the brass insert.

^ Use a liquid adhesive to secure brass insert to plastic upright.

^ Using compressed air, clean any plastic filings away from cowl and brass threads.

^ Secure wires and connectors at steering column with ratchet strap wire ties.

^ Install upper and lower steering column cowls.
