D/E Post Upper Quarter Trim Pad - Loose
76-84D/E Post Interior Upper Quarter Trim Pad - Loose - Repair Procedure
MODEL: 92 MY XJS
DATE: 10/92
ISSUE:
The D/E Post upper quarter trim pad becomes detached due to a poor adhesive bond between the body inner quarter panel and the inner surface of the trim pad on vehicles between VIN 179737 - 182769. The problem can also be aggravated by misalignment of the pad mountings.
ACTION:
A single "push-in" button (BBC 7525) was introduced at VIN 182770. It is installed in both the right and left hand side D/E post upper quarter trim pads, (Fig. 1).
To repair detached trim pads on pre-VIN 182770 vehicles, use the following procedure:
^ Remove the right and left hand rear upper trim pads from the vehicle.
^ Apply masking tape to the surface of the right and left hand side trim pads, as indicated in Fig. 2. Using a steel ruler and a pencil, mark out (on the tape) the location of the "push-in" button.
NOTE:
The position of the hole should be 24 mm directly above the light, as indicated in Fig. 1 & 2.
^ At the marked position, drill a 4 mm diameter hole in both trim. pads. Open up these holes using a 10 mm diameter drill. These 10 mm holes are the correct size for the push-in buttons.
^ Mark the position of the hole on the body inner quarter panel. Make sure the mark lines up with the hole in the trim pad, (Fig. 3)
^ Remove both trim pads from the vehicle and remove the masking tape from the pads. Drill a pilot hole of 4 mm diameter at the marked position on the inner quarter panels. Open these holes out to 7.5 mm diameter to accept the push-in buttons.
CAUTION:
When drilling the inner quarter panel, make sure that the drill depth is controlled to avoid damaging the outside quarter panel.
^ Apply a small amount of silicone grease to the bare metal edge of the holes drilled in the body and install both trim pads. Secure the pads using the "push in" buttons.
