Loose Underfloor Vacuum Pipe-Knocking Noise
MODEL XJ-S DATE 6/91
ISSUE:
A knocking noise coming from under the vehicle can be caused by the ECU vacuum pipe coming loose from the underfloor retaining clip and hitting the propshaft or tunnel.
ACTION:
Steel retaining clips are used on vehicles from VIN 177600.
If the knocking noise mentioned above occurs on pre-VIN 177600 vehicles, replace the original plastic clip in the propshaft tunnel area with a steel clip (C 1040/6).
Use the following procedure to replace the clip:
^ Remove the propshaft (refer to Service Manual section 47.15.01).
^ Locate the plastic "P" clip on the left side of the propshaft tunnel, just behind the transmission. Drill out the old pop rivet, but do not penetrate the body panel. Remove the plastic "P" clip.
^ Install and align the steel clip to the vacuum pipe and mount the clip with a pop rivet in the existing hole.
^ Install the propshaft.
