Engine - Poor Operation Due To Poor Ground

MODEL XJS
DATE 4/92

ISSUE:
Poor grounding of the engine to the body can cause:

^ Engine not starting (or is hard to start)
^ No fuel injection pulse
^ Rough engine operation at all speeds.

ACTION:
Check the engine ground strap for looseness and/or corrosion.

NOTE:
The braided ground strap connects to the fourth oil pan bolt from the left front corner of the engine to the crossmember. It is then attached to a second cable coming from the body frame rail. Corrosion at any of these attaching points will result in a poor engine ground.

^ Behind the crossmember, remove the fourth oil pan bolt and engine ground strap eyelet.

^ Remove the nut and bolt securing the ground straps to the crossmember.

^ In front of the crossmember, remove the ground strap where it is secured to the left front frame rail.

^ Remove the ground strap and clean eyelets. Replace straps (C 44184) if they are corroded.

^ Clean the engine oil pan, crossmember, and front frame rail ground points with a cleaning solvent.

^ Using course emery paper, sand the front frame rail and crossmember where ground eyelets attach.

^ Clean nuts and bolts and attach straps to engine, crossmember, and frame rail.

^ Torque all bolts to 12-15 ft.lbs.

NOTE:
To prevent corrosion, cover all strap eyelets and ground points with a thin coating of high temperature grease.
