Vehicle Feature Changes

MODEL: 92MY XJS

DATE: 8/92

The following feature changes have been made to XJS vehicles as a 1992 MY running change:

Underfloor Cruciform Strut - From VIN 184574:

An underfloor cruciform strut (Fig. 1 A) is incorporated on XJS Convertibles. The strut, which increases the rigidity of the body shell, is constructed of a stainless steel tube and is mounted under the engine bay. The strut is mounted at the following four points:

- Two at the forward jacking points beneath the footwells, (Fig. 1 B).

- Two on the lower body cross-member beneath the radiator, (Fig. 1 C).

Buffers (Fig. 1 D) are attached to the cruciform strut to ensure that no metal contact occurs between the strut and the suspension cross-beam. The strut front location (Fig. 1 E) is secured by a bolt and washer. The strut rear location (Fig. 1 F) is secured by a jacking stud, washer, spacer and reinforcing disc.

CAUTION:
The center straightening plate of the cruciform bracing strut (Fig. 2 A) must not be used as a jacking point.

At the center of the bottom face of the cross-beam is a jack locating pad (Fig. 2 B), which should be used when the front of the vehicle is lifted. The jacking pad is attached to the crossbeam by a bolt and nut.

New Engine Oil Cooler - From VIN 184574:

The addition of the underfloor Cruciform Strut necessitates the rerouting of the engine oil cooler pipes and repositioning of the engine oil cooler. The oil cooler is an aluminum tube fin pack design, which is relocated to the hood hinge mounting panel.

Longer Convertible Springs From VIN 184574:

Longer front and rear springs are now used on XJS Convertibles. This is to compensate for the reduction in ground clearance because of the new underfloor cruciform strut. The setting procedure for the front end alignment is unchanged. Refer to Technical Bulletin 57-11.

Introduction of Tibbe Lock Door Handles From VIN 184127 (Coupe), VIN 184138 (Convertible):

A Tibbe door handle and lock barrel system has been introduced. To allow this, two link rods, a link clip and a bell crank are included in the door casing. The door handle aperture has been revised to suit the new handle.

The large black key (Fig. 3 A) and the small black key (Fig. 3 B) operate the combined steering column lock/Ignition switch and the door, luggage compartment, glove compartment and rear stowage compartment locks. The small green key (Fig. 3 C) locks all the Tibbe locks but does not unlock the luggage compartment, glove compartment, and rear stowage compartment locks. The all metal key (Fig. 3 D) operates the fuel filler cap lock (Convertible only).

Front Carpet Turnbuckle Fastener

Two turnbuckle fasteners have been introduced at the rear of each front carpet to provide positive location through the eyelets.

These turnbuckles also hold the Jaguar accessory mats in position which now have matching eyelets similar to the front carpets.
