Exhaust Gas Recirculation: Testing and Inspection

There are three instances when the PCME will flag a Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) CHECK ENGINE warning.
1. Temperature too high in the EGR system. The PCME will shut down the system and flag the fault.
2. EGR system not operating in correct load/speed range. The PCME will flag the fault.
3. EGR system operating at too low a temperature. The PCME will shut down the system and flag the fault.

Note: The Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTC) applicable to the EGR system are 37 and 39. DTC code 37 looks for PCME output. Fault code 39 looks at system operation, i.e. flowing/not flowing when it should be.

JDS will test the EGR function as part of the engine set up procedure, the operator being asked to raise the engine speed to 2000 RPM in neutral. The EGR will be turned on and the temperature rise measured at the sensor.
