Air Bag Systems: Description and Operation
SUPPLEMENTARY RESTRAINT SYSTEM INTRODUCTIONGeneral
Starting 1993 model year, all USA and Canadian market vehicles are fitted as standard with a 'Supplementary Restraint System' (SRS). The system comprises of a driver side airbag, tear loop seat belt buckle, non 'web locking' seat belt assembly and knee bolster. These components are designed to operate as an integrated package for enhanced occupant safety. A similar system is available in most other markets as an option but differs in having a recalibrated airbag, standard seat belt buckle, 'web locking' seat belt and standard underscuttle pad.
Note:
To ensure operator safety during removal and handling of the airbag, a mechanism is built into the module to allow it to be armed and disarmed.
The airbag module CANNOT be removed from the steering wheel unless the module is disarmed.
The USA / Canadian airbag modules are NOT interchangeable with 'other market' modules.
