Tilt steering wheel with air bag

A new steering column with provision for six-position tilt is used for 1993 model year vehicles. No telescoping feature is provided. The release lever is located on the left side of the column and allows the steering wheel and the column switch gear to tilt. The air bag supplementary restraint system is described in the Safety Systems section of this publication.

Power Steering Reservoir:

The radiator couplings for the power steering fluid cooler are push-on connections that require service tool JD 182 for removal.

Steering Column:

Steering column and rack

The steering rack pinion angle is changed by rotating the rack 10.50 to the horizontal [toward the rear ofthe vehicle). This change allows the upper and lower universal joint angles to more closely match, providing smoother steering. A new gaiter made of improved material is used to seal the column.


In order to reduce steering effort while parking, increased power assist is provided. The increase is made possible by enlarging the cross sectional area of the rack piston and barrel.
