Ball Joint: Service and Repair
1. Raise and support vehicle, then disconnect brake pad wear sensor.
2. Remove lower guide pin bolt from caliper. Pivot caliper upwards to remove brake pads.
3. Remove brake pads, upper guide pin bolt and the caliper.
4. Remove track rod end to steering arm securing nut.
5. Remove track rod end joint by using swivel-hub ball pin removal tool No. JD100 or equivalent.
6. Remove upper ball joint securing bolts. Note position and remove caster shims.
7. Remove lower ball joint securing nut. Separate ball joint using ball joint removal tool No. JD100 or equivalent.
8. Loosen lower ball joint securing bolts, then remove the ball joint.
9. Reverse procedure to install, noting the following:
a. Tighten to specifications.
b. Check and adjust wheel alignment.
Service Bulletin: The bolts securing the lower ball pin cap to the stub axle carrier may be installed in the incorrect location.
The bolts with a head thickness of .3125 inch must be installed in the inboard holes of the lower ball pin cap. The bolts with a head thickness of .1875 inch must be installed in the outboard holes of lower ball pin cap.
It is extremely important that these bolts are installed in the correct location if removed during replacement procedures.
