Hood Gas Strut - Poor Support When Fully Open

76-82

Hood Gas Strut - Loss of Gas Pressure -
Install New Locking Strut

MODEL:
XJS

DATE:
9/92

ISSUE:

Loss of gas pressure in the hood gas strut resulting in poor hood support when in the fully open position.

ACTION:

To prevent the above condition from occurring, a locking support strut is now installed to the left-hand side of the hood beginning with VIN 184672.

For pre-VIN 184672 vehicles, a new locking support strut can be installed using the following procedure:

^ Open the hood and undo the left-side strut ball pins on the hood and inner fender. Provide additional support for the hood and remove and discard the strut and strut mounting bolts.

^ Install new ball pins (BEC 13584) to the mounting brackets on the hood and inner fender, (Fig. 1). Torque to 10-12 N-m.

^ Install the new locking gas strut (BEC 15544), (Fig. 2).

NOTE:
The new gas strut can be identified by a red warning label adhered to it.

^ Adhere hood open/close warning label (BEC 17641) as indicated in Fig. 3. Also adhere labels to the left and right-hand top corners of the hood, above hood strikers.

SERVICE ADVISOR NOTE:

Be sure to show customers the correct way of engaging and disengaging the locking strut.

To lock the strut, raise the hood to the fully open position.

To disengage the lock, pull the hood down slightly then raise it fully open. Then lower the hood and close as normal.
