Starter Motor - Will Not Engage -
Adjust Starter Inhibit Switch

MODEL:
V12 XJS

DATE:
11/92

ISSUE:

Starter motor will not engage.

ACTION:

If the above condition occurs, adjust the starter inhibit switch (Neutral Switch) using the following procedure:

^ Disconnect the battery.

^ Remove the gear selector knob.

^ Remove the cigar lighter and cruise control bezels to gain access to the 8 mm screws. Loosen but do not remove the screws.

^ Open the center glove box lid and remove the two screws attaching the glove box catch to the center console. Remove the catch.

^ Remove the screw attaching the wood trim to the center console.

^ Lift the wood trim from the rear of the console and disconnect the electric window switch connections.

^ Carefully remove the wood trim from the console.

^ Loosen the four 8 mm gear selector cover nuts and remove the gear selector cover.

^ Identify the innermost micro switch at the front of the gear selector cover. The starter inhibit switch will have a black and black green (BG) wire attached.

^ With the gear selector in the Park or Neutral position, connect an ohmmeter positive lead to the BG wire and the negative lead to the chassis ground. The ohmeter MUST indicate continuity through the switch in both Park or Neutral positions.

If an open circuit condition exists, perform the following:

^ Loosen the two 4 mm screws securing the inhibit switch to the gear selector linkage, (Fig. 1). Rotate the switch towards the gear selector linkage until the plunger on the switch is fully depressed and the ohmmeter indicates continuity.

^ Tighten the 4 mm securing screws.

^ Verify continuity in both Park and Neutral positions.

^ Replace and adjust the switch if continuity cannot be achieved.
