TECHNICAL BULLETIN 86-122

ISSUE:

Window lift motor sticking/binding.

ACTION:

From VIN 184117-onwards, revised window lift motors (incorporating an 8 tooth drive pinion) were introduced for the front door glass.

NOTE:
The new 8 tooth drive pinion motors are now the only motors available for service. Installing new motors to pre-VIN 184117 vehicles will require additional new parts due to connector and regulator design changes.

Refer to the VIN information included in the flow chart of this bulletin to ensure that the correct motor kit, regulator, link harness and hardware are installed.

Repair Procedure:

^ Verify left or right front window lift failure.

^ Refer to XJS Repair Manual Section 86. For pre-VIN 176860 XJS coupes refer to Technical Bulletin 76-66, step 5, before replacing window lift components.

CAUTION:
Do not bolt an 8 tooth motor to a regulator assembly which had a 10 tooth motor. Gear jump and damage will occur as the motor attempts to drive the regulator unit.

From VIN 179737 to VIN 184116, the new motor kit is installed to the regulator as indicated in Fig. 1. Left and right part numbers are noted on flow charts.

Refer to the flow chart in this bulletin to determine which parts should be installed on a vehicle.
