Wheel Bearing: Service and Repair
HUB BEARING
- Slacken off the front road wheel nuts 1/4 turn each.
- Jack up the front of the vehicle and support with axle stands.
- Remove one wheel nut, mark the wheel relative to the stud, and remove the remaining wheel nuts.
- Remove the road wheel/tire assembly.
- Disconnect the brake pad wear sensor block connector.
- Remove the lower guide pin bolt (1) from the caliper.
- Pivot the caliper (1) upwards to gain access to the brake pads (2).
NOTE: Use an open-ended spanner to hold the guide pin during removal. This will prevent damage to the rubber dust cover.
- Remove the brake pads and remove the upper guide pin bolt.
- Re-position the caliper for access to the carrier securing bolts (3), cut and remove the lock wire (4).
- Remove the carrier securing bolts and remove the carrier.
- Remove the disc securing screw and remove the disc.
- Pry off the hub grease cap.
- Remove the hub nut split pin and cover.
- Remove the hub nut and washer.
- Remove the hub assembly.
- Remove the outer bearing from the hub.
- Using a suitable punch, remove the inner (5), and outer bearing tracks (2).
- Remove the inner bearing (1) and seal from the stub axle (2).
- Clean all components and examine for wear and damage.
- Replace all damaged components.
- Refit the inner bearing track to the new hub using Service Tool 1 8G 134 and adaptor JD 550-5/1.
- Refit the outer bearing track to the new hub using Service Tool 1 8G 134 and adaptor JD 550-5/2.
- Fit the outer bearing and seal to the hub.
- Fit the inner bearing and a new seal to the stub axle.
- Pack the hub and coat the stub axle with Shell Retinax A grease.
- Lubricate the hub seal track.
- Fit the hub assembly to the stub axle.
- Fit the hub nut and washer.
- Tighten the nut to obtain an end float of 0.0762-0.0254mm (0.003-0.001 in).
- Align the hub nut cover and secure with a new split pin.
- Refit the grease cap.
- Refit the front disc assembly.
- Refit the road wheel.
- Lower the vehicle from the axle stands.
- Pump the brake pedal to centralize the pads.
