Automatic Transmission/Transaxle: Service and Repair
1. Disconnect cruise control to throttle linkage clip, plastic link and spring, then remove clevis pin.2. Disconnect kickdown cable from throttle linkage.
3. Remove bolt attaching dipstick tube to intake manifold.
4. Install engine lifting tool 18G-1465 or equivalent, to rear studs of intake manifold, then engine lifting service tool MS 53 or equivalent, across the fender apron channels. Tighten hook nut to take weight off engine.
5. Raise and support vehicle, then drain transmission fluid.
6. Remove catalytic converter if equipped, then remove front pipe to intermediate pipe heat shield, clamp and sealing ring. Disconnect front pipe from intermediate pipe.
7. Position exhaust system away from transmission.
8. Support transmission with a suitable transmission jack, then remove rear mounting to body attaching bolts and lower transmission and mounting assembly.
9. Remove rear mounting assembly, then the transmission jack.
10. Remove driveshaft.
11. Remove selector cable rear bracket bolt, then the selector lever to shaft attaching nut.
12. Loosen dipstick tube union nut and remove tube.
13. Remove clamp securing transmission cooling lines to the transmission and disconnect lines. Plug all lines and fittings.
14. Remove plug from torque converter bolt access opening, then the crankshaft/driveplate bolts by turning the crankshaft to access and remove each bolt.
15. Remove stone guard from the housing, then the torque converter from the driveplate.
16. Release kickdown cable from converter housing and position it aside.
17. Remove eight converter housing bolts, then position a suitable transmission jack to transmission.
18. Remove two remaining converter housing bolts and carefully lower transmission from rear of the engine.
19. Slightly lower engine and transmission from vehicle to gain access to bellhousing bolts.
20. Remove bellhousing bolts and lower transmission from vehicle.
21. Reverse procedure to install.
