Accelerator Pedal Alignment - Check/Replace Accelerator Pedal Assembly - Recall Action R847

Issue:

A concern has been identified with the alignment of the accelerator pedal on a number of XK vehicles within the above VIN range.

The accelerator pedal arms, manufactured out of circular section steel, were incorrectly formed by the pedal supplier. Some of the parts from this batch of pedal arms were assembled into the accelerator pedal assemblies of Jaguar XK vehicles. This results in reduced clearance between the accelerator pedal and the brake pedal and can increase the risk of both pedals being applied by the driver at the same time.

Jaguar Cars has decided to recall the affected vehicles for an inspection to determine if the pedal assembly is from the affected batch. If needed, the pedal assembly will be replaced with a new one.

A number of vehicles have been reworked at the factory prior to dispatch and are not affected by this Recall Action. To assist you in identifying the vehicles that need to be inspected, an affected vehicle listing is shown. If the vehicle is not on the affected vehicle list, no rework action is required. Please ensure that you check the vehicle is still outstanding prior to undertaking any rework action. DDW will be updated from the date of this Recall Action to reflect only the vehicles still outstanding the inspection and rework.

Action:

Check the accelerator pedal alignment of all 2006 MY XK vehicles listed in this bulletin.

All unsold vehicles or vehicles that have not been handed over to the customer must be inspected and, if necessary, repaired prior to sale or onward distribution.

If the inspection reveals that the alignment of the accelerator pedal is within the acceptable limit, no further action is required. The workshop procedure for the inspection is included in this bulletin.

If the alignment of the accelerator pedal is outside of the acceptable limit, replace the accelerator pedal assembly. To replace the accelerator pedal assembly, refer to Global Technical Reference (GTR), Workshop Manual; section 310-02 Acceleration Control.

XK ACCELERATOR PEDAL ALIGNMENT

Check the alignment of the accelerator pedal (item 1 of Illustration 1) and the throttle stop (item 2 of Illustration 1).

1. Depress the accelerator pedal to contact the throttle stop.

Note:
The accelerator pedal should cover a minimum of half the throttle stop laterally (measuring across the center) leaving a maximum of 20 mm (A, Illustration 2) of exposed throttle stop.

2. If the measurement is 20 mm or less, torque the accelerator pedal assembly fixings to 9 Nm (6.6 lb-ft); no further action is required.

3. If the measurement is greater than 20 mm (C, Illustration 3), remove the accelerator pedal assembly. Refer to Global Technical Reference (GTR), Workshop Manual, section 310-02.

4. Remove the throttle stop and locating stud from the removed accelerator pedal assembly and install it on the new accelerator pedal assembly, part number JLM 21753.

5. If the accelerator pedal pad is aluminum, remove the aluminum pedal pad from the removed pedal assembly and install it on the new pedal assembly.

6. Install the new accelerator pedal assembly, refer to Global Technical Reference (GTR), Workshop Manual, section 310-02.
