Removal and Installation
GRAND WAGONEER, J-10 & 20 TRUCK & 1980-83 CHEROKEE & WAGONEER1. Raise and support vehicle.
2. Drain transfer case lubricant.
3. Mark alignment of transfer case front and rear output shaft yokes and propeller shafts, then disconnect front and rear propeller shafts from output shaft yokes.
4. Disconnect speedometer cable and indicator switch wires from transfer case.
5. Support transmission with a suitable jack and remove rear crossmember.
6. Disconnect parking brake cable guide from pivot, located at right frame rail, if necessary.
7. Remove bolts attaching exhaust pipe support bracket to transfer case, if necessary.
8. Remove transfer case to transmission attaching bolts.
9. Remove transfer case from vehicle.
10. Remove transfer case to transmission gasket and discard.
11. Install new transfer case to transmission gasket.
12. Reverse steps 1 through 9 to install.
1984-87 QUADRA-TRAC
1. Raise and support vehicle and drain lubricant from transfer case.
2. Disconnect speedometer cable and vent hose, then the transfer case shift lever link at the operating lever.
3. Place suitable support under transmission and remove rear crossmember.
4. Scribe alignment marks on transfer case front and rear output shafts at transfer case yokes and propeller shafts for proper assembly.
5. Disconnect front and rear propeller shafts at transfer case yokes and secure shafts out of way.
6. Disconnect shift motor vacuum hoses and the transfer case shift linkage.
7. Remove transfer case to transmission attaching bolts.
8. Move transfer case rearward until clear of transmission output shaft and remove assembly.
9. Remove all gasket material from rear of transmission adapter housing.
10. Reverse procedure to install.
