Cylinder Head Assembly: Service and Repair
Fig. 3 Cylinder head tightening sequence. V8 engine:
1. Remove air cleaner and drain cooling system, then if equipped with Air Guard emission system, disconnect air hose from injection manifold.
2. Disconnect all hoses and electrical leads from intake manifold, noting position for installation.
3. Remove valve covers, bridged pivot assemblies, rocker arms and pushrods. Loosen each bridged pivot bolt one turn at a time to avoid breaking the bridged pivot. Also, keep rocker arms, bridged pivot and pushrods in same order as removed so that they can be reinstalled in their original locations.
4. Disconnect spark plug wires and remove spark plugs.
5. Remove intake manifold and disconnect exhaust manifolds from cylinder head.
6. Loosen all drive belts, then if equipped with air conditioning, remove compressor bracket attaching bolts and set compressor aside.
7. Disconnect alternator support brace, power steering mounting bracket and Air Guard pump (if used) mounting bracket from cylinder head.
8. Remove cylinder head bolts and cylinder head.
9. Reverse procedure to install. Torque head bolts in two steps using sequence shown in Fig. 3. First torque bolts to 80 ft. lbs., then torque bolts to value given in ``Engine Tightening Specifications'' chart. The cylinder block has two locating dowels on each bank to assist in lining up and holding the cylinder head and gasket in position during installation. The No. 7 bolt shown in Fig. 3, second from front on the left bank, must have the threads sealed to prevent coolant leakage. Permatex No. 2 or equivalent is recommended.
