Engine: Service and Repair
Engine lubrication system. V8 engine:
1. Disconnect cables from battery and remove battery.
2. On all except CJ and Scrambler models, mark hood hinge location, disconnect hood lamp wiring if equipped and remove hood.
3. Remove air cleaner assembly from carburetor.
4. Drain cooling system, then disconnect upper, lower and heater hoses.
5. On models equipped with automatic transmission, disconnect fluid cooler lines from radiator and engine retaining brackets.
6. Remove fan shroud, if equipped.
7. Remove radiator and fan assembly from vehicle.
8. Disconnect and cap power steering lines from power steering pump, if equipped.
9. On models equipped with air conditioning, proceed as follows:
a. Turn compressor service fitting valve stem to the front seated position.
b. Loosen service fitting.
c. Carefully and gradually discharge refrigerant from compressor. Do not allow refrigerant to contact eyes or skin.
d. Remove service valve fitting from compressor.
10. Remove speed control vacuum servo bellows and mounting bracket as an assembly, if equipped.
11. Mark and disconnect all vacuum lines and electrical connectors from engine.
12. Disconnect fuel lines from frame hoses.
13. On models equipped with automatic transmission, disconnect filler tube bracket from engine.
14. Raise and support vehicle.
15. Remove both engine front support cushion to frame retaining nuts.
16. Disconnect exhaust pipe from manifolds and front bracket.
17. Remove starter motor.
18. On models equipped with automatic transmission, proceed as follows:
a. Remove flywheel inspection cover and scribe matching mark between flex plate and torque converter.
b. Remove torque converter bolts, rotating crankshaft as needed to gain access to bolts.
c. Remove support for lower throttle valve and inner manual linkage, then disconnect throttle valve rod from lower bell crank.
19. On all models, remove upper bellhousing to engine bolts and loosen lower bolts.
20. Lower vehicle and attach suitable lifting equipment to engine.
21. Raise engine to remove weight from mounts, place suitable support under transmission, and remove lower bellhousing bolts.
22. Separate engine from transmission and remove engine, taking care not to damage brake booster.
23. Reverse procedure to install.
