AMC Ignition System Engine Misfires But Will Not Start
1. Check ignition timing.
2. Check for moisture inside distributor.
3. Check for defective distributor cap.
4. Ensure spark plug wires are connected in correct firing order.
ENGINE WILL RUN ONLY WITH IGNITION SWITCH IN START POSITION
1. Check resistance wire for excessive resistance or open circuit.
ENGINE CONTINUES TO RUN WITH IGNITION SWITCH IN OFF POSITION
1. Check for defective starter motor solenoid.
2. Check alternator warning lamp circuit for defective diode.
ROUGH ENGINE OPERATION &/OR ENGINE MISFIRE AT HIGH SPEED
1. Check condition of spark plugs.
2. Check condition of ignition wire, including electronic retard.
3. Check spark advance system.
4. Ensure distributor trigger wheel pin is properly installed.
5. Ensure spark plug wires are connected in correct firing order.
6. Ensure two spark plug wires of consecutive firing cylinders are not routed next to each other.
7. Check for short at S terminal at starter solenoid.
FUEL CONSUMPTION EXCESSIVE
1. Check ignition timing,
2. Check spark advance system.
3. Check for defective microprocessor (MCU).
TIMING ADVANCE ERRATIC
1. Check for defective vacuum advance unit.
2. Check for sticking mechanical advance weights.
VACUUM ADVANCE NOT FUNCTIONING
1. Check for defective vacuum advance unit.
2. Ensure vacuum advance unit adjusting screw is not rotated too far counterclockwise.
3. Check for corroded or sticking pick up coil pivot.
INTERMITTENT OPERATION
1. Check ignition system terminals for loose or corroded connections.
2. Check for defective pick up coil.
3. Check for defective electronic control unit.
4. Check distributor trigger wheel pin for proper installation.
5. Check for loose distributor ground connector.
6. Check wiring to distributor for short circuit.
