AMC Ignition System Intermittent Diagnosis


Intermittent failures are temporary. If the engine fails to start on the first try, it will eventually start on succeeding tries. If an intermittent failure occurs when the vehicle is operating, the engine may stop, but it will restart and continue operate intermittently.

ENGINE WILL NOT START
If spark is present at spark plugs, check ignition timing or fuel system for cause. If no spark is present at spark plugs, check for the following:
1. Check for voltage to ignition system. Check battery, ignition switch and related wiring.
2 Check electronic control unit ground wires in distributor.
3. Check primary wire connectors for proper connection.
4. Check for open or shorted ignition coil.
5. Check for defective electronic control unit.
6. Check for defective distributor cap or rotor.
