Cleaning and Inspection

CLEANING AND INSPECTION

Clean all of the transmission components with solvent. Dry the bearings and races with shop towels. Compressed air may be used to dry the remaining components. Apply compressed air to all feed holes and channels in the gears, shafts and cases to remove cleaning solvent and verify that they are clear.

Inspect the transmission gears and synchronizers for wear or damage. Replace any part that is worn, chipped, cracked or otherwise damaged.

NOTE: The synchronizers are serviced as assemblies only. Replace any synchronizer that is damaged or worn. Do not attempt to disassemble them.

Check each of the transmission cases for cracks, stripped threads, distortion or damaged bearing or sealing surfaces. Also inspect the shift rail bores in each case for wear or scoring. Repair or replace any case if damaged.

Inspect the shift forks and rails for wear or damage. Replace any rail or fork if worn, distorted, cracked or heavily scored. Replace shift rail detent balls that are chipped, cracked or severely worn and replace any detent springs that are distorted or broken.

Inspect all of the transmission bearings, races and bushings. Replace components that are worn, pitted, chipped or spalled. Carefully inspect the fifth gear roller bearing cage. Replace the roller bearing if the cage is loose, cracked or distorted.
