Parking Brake System: Adjustments

NOTE: Tool J-34651, Parking Brake Cable Adjustment Gauge, is required to perform this adjustment to factory specifications.

ADJUSTMENT

NOTE: The rear drum brakes are equipped with a self-adjusting mechanism. Under normal circumstances, the only time adjustment is required is when the shoes are replaced; removed for access to other parts; or when one or both drums are replaced.
The only tool needed for adjustment is a standard brake gauge.

1. Adjustment is performed with the brakeshoes installed on the support plate. Procedure is as follows:
^ If necessary, raise the rear of the vehicle and remove the wheels and brake drums.
^ Verify that the left/right automatic adjuster lever and cable are properly connected.

Brake Adjustment Gauge:

^ Insert the brake gauge in the drum. Expand the gauge until the gauge inner legs contact the drum braking surface. Then lock the gauge in position.

Adjusting Brake Shoes With Gauge:

^ Reverse the gauge and install it on the brakeshoes. Position the gauge legs at the shoe centers as shown. If the gauge does not fit (too loose/too tight), adjust the shoes.
^ Pull the shoe adjuster star wheel away from the automatic adjuster lever.
^ Turn the adjuster star wheel (by hand) to expand or retract the brakeshoes. Continue adjustment until the gauge outside legs are a light drag-fit on the shoes.
^ Repeat adjustment at the opposite brakeshoe assembly.
^ Install the brake drums and wheels and lower the vehicle.
^ Make final adjustment as follows: Drive vehicle and make &ne forward stop followed by one reverse stop. Repeat procedure 8-10 times to actuate self adjuster

2. Final Adjustment:
^ Place the parking brake lever in the 5th notch.

^ Raise the vehicle and, using Adjustment Gauge J-34651 (1), apply a torque of 5.1-5.7 Nm (45-50 in. lbs.).

Park Brake Adjustment:

^ Adjust the nut (2) on the equalizer (3) so that the gauge pointer is in the green band.
^ Fully apply and release the parking brake lever five times and recheck the adjustment.
^ Perform the necessary adjustment and tighten lock nut or stake the threads after the adjustment, as equipped.
