Administrative Procedure

SERVICE PROCEDURE VIDEOTAPE

No videotape of the service procedure for this recall will be provided.

DEALER NOTIFICATION & VEHICLE LIST

Involved dealers: Each dealer to whom involved vehicles were invoiced (or the current dealer at the same street address) will receive a copy of this dealer recall notification letter by first class mail. A list of the involved vehicles was provided at initial recall implementation.

The Vehicle List was arranged in Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) sequence. Owners known to Chrysler were also listed. The lists are for dealer reference in arranging for service of involved vehicles as necessary.

All other California dealers: Each California Jeep & Eagle dealer will receive a copy of this dealer recall notification letter by first class mail.

Non-California Dealers will also receive copies of these recall instructions by CMMS Mail. Some involved vehicles may have been relocated outside of California, and the instructions will allow dealers to perform this service on such vehicles upon request.

DIAL SYSTEM FUNCTION 70

All involved vehicles were entered to DIAL System Function 70 at the time of recall implementation for dealer inquiry by VIN as needed.

RECALL COMPLETION LABEL REQUIREMENT

There is a California Air Resources Board requirement to affix a label to the vehicle to certify that the emissions recall was completed. A label is included in each emissions service parts package. Refer to the Service Procedure of this letter for application instructions.

OWNER NOTIFICATION AND SERVICE SCHEDULING

All involved vehicle owners known to Chrysler were notified of the service requirement by first class mail at initial recall implementation. A copy of the owner notification letter is included.

Enclosed with each owner notification is an Owner Notification Form. The involved vehicle and recall are identified on the form for owner or dealer reference as needed.

DEALER SERVICE INSTRUCTIONS

Please remove and discard the original recall notification (dated December, 1994) from your files and replace it with this revised procedure.

This service requirement applies only to 1989 model year Jeep Cherokee (XJ), Comanche (MJ) and Wrangler (YJ) vehicles equipped with a 2.5L engine and California emission control system.

Failure of the oxygen sensor, PCV hose (YJ only), transfer case vacuum hose (4WD only) and/or fuel tank vent valve (FTVV) boot (YJ with steel fuel tank only) on the above listed vehicles may cause the vehicle to be in violation of California Emissions Standards. In addition, the exhaust manifold may produce an exhaust leak noise. To correct these conditions, the listed components must be replaced and the exhaust manifold must be checked for an audible leak and replaced as necessary.

PCV hose replacement as defined in step C27 or Section E of the service procedure, only applies to Wrangler (YJ) vehicles. Cherokee (XJ) and Comanche (MJ) vehicles are equipped with a crankcase vent (CCV) system and do not require PCV hose replacement

Be sure to provide a Vehicle Emission Recall Proof of Correction Form to each owner upon completion of the recall service, for owner use as proof during renewal of the vehicle registration.

PARTS PACKAGES:
Each involved dealer, to whom vehicles in the recall were invoiced, received enough Emission Service packages to service 25% of those vehicles. In addition, each California Jeep & Eagle dealer received one Exhaust Manifold package.
