Scan Tool Testing and Procedures
NOTES1. A SCAN tool is required to extract fault codes from these vehicles.
2. Verify the following points before starting diagnosis with the SCAN tool:
- The vehicle battery is fully charged.
- All diagnostic connectors are in good condition, well lubricated, and properly connected.
- The correct diagnostic connector is selected for the appropriate vehicle.
- The correct diagnostic cartridge is installed in the SCAN tool for the appropriate vehicle.
3. If an "OP CODE" is displayed on the SCAN tool screen, one of the following problems could be the cause:
- The cartridge may need to be removed and reinstalled to reset the SCAN tool.
- The system that showed the "OP CODE" may have also revealed a fault code. This may indicate the vehicle circuit that the SCAN tool cannot interpret.
- Shorted circuit, pushed out or corroded terminals, or loose grounds.
- Shorted crank sensor output circuit.
- Open ignition coil circuit.
SCAN TOOL NOTE:
Not all SCAN testers are compatible with every system. A SCAN tool that produces faulty readings should NOT be used, and the problem should be reported to the tool manufacturer. Use of a faulty SCAN tool can result in improper diagnosis and unnecessary component replacement. Follow the proper instructions, located in the owners manual, for the specific SCAN tool being used.
CONTROL KEY IDENTIFICATION
Key Function
YES (ARROW DOWN) When this key is pressed it scrolls you down through each menu option or lists of individual displays.
NO (ARROW UP) When this key is pressed it scrolls backwards through each menu option or lists of individual displays.
ATM This key is used to return the technician to the previous menu, and it will highlight the last option that the technician selected. If this key is pressed simultaneously with the MODE key, the SCAN tool will be reset as if it were disconnected and reconnected to the vehicle.
MODE When pressed simultaneously with the ATM key, the SCAN tool will be reset as if it were disconnected and reconnected to the vehicle. When viewing fault codes in any one area of engine diagnosis, pressing the MODE key will display all fault codes from all areas of engine diagnosis. If the MODE key is pressed while performing actuator tests, all test will be stopped.
ENTER When this key is pressed it performs many different functions based on what is displayed on the SCAN tool screen. If scrolling through menus, this key can be pressed to select menu options appropriate for the technicians demands. If this key is pressed while scrolling through non-numbered lists of displays, a line indicated by the flashing option pointers >< will be selected.
F1 (LEFT ARROW) This key is used to back up through previous screens of information. Each time the button is pressed, one page of information is scrolled back.
F2 (RIGHT ARROW) This key is used to move forward through screens of information. Each time the button is pressed, the user advances one page of information.
F3 This key is a help key. When this key is pressed a help screen will display in place of the current screen. When the key is released the help screen will disappear and the current screen will be redisplayed. This key can be pressed at any time, and will help to explain key press options and SCAN tool operation.
EXTRACTING AND ERASING FAULT CODES
1. When the SCAN tool has been correctly connected and powered up, the first menu that will be displayed will look like the following list:
1) VEHICLES TESTED
2) HOW TO USE
3) CONFIGURE
4) SELECT SYSTEM
2. Select menu option 4) SELECT SYSTEM by pressing the numeric key #4.
3. After you have selected 4) SELECT SYSTEM, a menu will be displayed that will look like the following list:
1) ENGINE
2) TRANSMISSION
3) BODY
4) SUSPENSION
5) ABS
6) PASSIVE REST
7) THEFT ALARM
4. Select menu option 1) ENGINE by pressing the numeric key #1.
5. After this option has been selected, the SCAN tool will display the vehicle engine displacement, emission control systems, transmission or transaxle type, and the engine controller part number.
6. Compare all of the information from step 5 to the equipment on the vehicle to verify that they both coincide.
7. A sub-menu will appear asking if the vehicle is equipped with A/C or not. Enter the appropriate data.
NOTE: If a vehicle without A/C is entered to have A/C, some fault messages associated with A/C could be generated. If a vehicle with A/C is entered as without A/C, certain fault codes, and displays would be locked out from the SCAN tool user and would not be displayed.
8. After the air conditioning screen, a menu of engine sub-systems will be displayed. The menu looks like this:
1) FUEL/IGNITION
2) CHARGING
3) SPEED CONTROL
9. Select menu option 1) FUEL/IGNITION by pressing numeric key #1.
10. After you select 1) FUEL/IGNITION a menu will be displayed that looks like this:
1) SYSTEM TEST
2) READ FAULTS
3) STATE DISPLAY
4) ACTUATOR TEST
5) ADJUSTMENTS
11. Select menu option 2) READ FAULTS by pressing numeric key #2.
12. This selection will test all of the circuits, actuators, solenoids, and systems. After it performs all of the tests, it determines if there are any faults for any of the systems and reveals them as fault codes or messages. If no faults or messages were found, the message "Vehicle Passes Electrical Test" will appear on the screen.
13. Press the ATM key after the completion of extracting fault codes, and you will see the same menu as shown in step 10.
14. Select menu option 5) ADJUSTMENTS by pressing numeric key #5. This selection is used to erase fault codes after they have been extracted and repaired.
15. The following menu will appear after 5) ADJUSTMENTS has been selected:
1) ERASE FAULT
2) RESET MEMORY
3) EMR MEMORY CHECK
16. Select menu option 1) ERASE FAULTS by pressing numeric key #1.
17. When this option is selected another screen will appear asking "Are you sure?". If you want to erase all fault codes press the ENTER key. If you made a mistake and do not want to erase the fault codes, press the ATM key and the same menu as in step 15 will appear.
18. When all of the steps are completed, press the ATM key until you get back to the main menu and shut the SCAN tool off. Disconnect the SCAN tool from the vehicle and reconnect any disconnected connectors.
