Transmission Replacement
REMOVAL1. Remove outer gear shift lever boot, then remove upper console attaching screws and the upper console.
2. Remove lower console attaching screws and the lower console.
3. Remove shift lever inner boot.
4. Using tool J-34635 or equivalent, remove gearshift lever.
5. Raise and support vehicle, then drain transmission and transfer case lubricant, as required.
6. Scribe alignment marks on rear propeller shaft and axle yoke, then remove propeller shaft.
7. On 2WD models, position suitable safety stands under transmission. On 4WD models, position a suitable jack under transfer case to support transmission and transfer case.
8. On all models, remove rear crossmember to frame rail attaching bolts and nuts, then the rear crossmember.
9. Disconnect speedometer cable, back-up light switch electrical connector and transfer case vent hose, as required.
10. On 4WD models, disconnect transfer case vacuum hoses and linkage.
11. On all models, remove slave cylinder to clutch housing attaching nuts and position slave cylinder aside.
12. On 4WD models, scribe alignment marks on front propeller shaft and transfer case yoke, then disconnect propeller shaft and secure to underbody with suitable wire.
13. On 2WD models, install suitable transmission jack under transmission. On 4WD models, install a suitable transmission jack to transmission and transfer case.
14. On 2WD models, remove transmission clutch housing to engine attaching bolts, then lower transmission from vehicle.
15. On 4WD models, remove transmission clutch housing to engine attaching bolts, then lower transmission and transfer case assembly from vehicle.
16. On 4WD models, remove transmission to transfer case attaching bolts, then separate transfer case from transmission.
INSTALLATION
1. Shift transmission into gear using shift lever or suitable screwdriver.
2. Install transmission onto transmission jack, then raise jack and align transmission input shaft with clutch disc splines.
3. Install transmission clutch housing to engine and tighten attaching bolts to specifications.
4. Install slave cylinder and tighten to specifications.
5. On 4WD models, position transfer case onto transmission jack, then raise jack and connect transfer case to transmission. Tighten attaching to specifications.
6. On all models, reconnect back-up light switch electrical connector and speedometer cable.
7. On 4WD models, install transfer case vent hose, linkage and vacuum hoses, then connect front propeller shaft to transfer case yoke, aligning scribe marks made during removal.
8. On all models, install rear crossmember and tighten attaching nuts and bolts to specifications.
9. Remove transmission jack, then connect rear propeller shaft to axle yoke, aligning scribe marks made during removal.
10. Fill transfer case and transmission with proper lubricant, as required, then lower vehicle.
11. Install gearshift lever, inner boot, lower and upper consoles, then the outer boot.
