Engine: Service and Repair

1. Disconnect cables from battery, remove battery and drain cooling system.
2. Mark position of hood hinges for assembly, disconnect electrical connector to hood lamp if equipped, then remove hood.
3. Disconnect electrical connectors from alternator, ignition coil and distributor, oil pressure switch and starter motor, then separate CEC system engine harness connector.
4. On models equipped with carburetor, disconnect supply pipe to fuel pump and plug pipe and pump fitting.
5. On models equipped with TBI, disconnect fuel tubes at quick disconnect couplings, located at left inner fender apron.
6. On all models, remove air cleaner and disconnect engine ground strap.
7. Disconnect vacuum purge and bowl vent hoses from canister, throttle linkage, idle speed control and MC solenoid electrical connectors, fuel return hose (at filter), and remove vacuum check valve from brake booster.
8. Disconnect coolant temperature and oxygen sensor electrical connectors.
9. Disconnect coolant hoses from radiator, rear of intake manifold and thermostat housing.
10. Remove fan shroud and radiator mounting bolts, then the fan shroud and radiator assembly.
11. Remove fan and spacer or thermostatic clutch, as equipped.
12. Install 5/16 x 1/2 inch SAE bolt through fan pulley and thread into water pump in order to maintain pulley alignment as crankshaft is rotated.
13. On models with power steering, disconnect hoses from steering gear, drain fluid into suitable container, then plug hoses and open fittings.
14. On models with A/C (aftermarket system), disconnect hoses or remove compressor, following manufacturer's instructions.
15. On all models, raise and support vehicle.
16. Remove starter motor, flywheel housing cover and front motor mount through bolts.
17. Disconnect exhaust pipe from manifold, remove upper flywheel housing bolts and loosen lower bolts.
18. Lower vehicle and attach suitable lifting equipment to engine.
19. Raise engine off mounts, place suitable support under flywheel housing and remove lower flywheel housing to engine bolts.
20. Separate engine from flywheel housing and remove from vehicle.
21. Reverse procedure to install.
