DISCUSSION

The door latch assembly used with the 1991 Wrangler full metal door has a new fastener for attaching the lock and door handle rods (See illustration). This new fastener requires a change in the rod installation procedure as explained below.

NOTE: THIS TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETIN SHOULD BE RECORDED ON PAGE 23-121 OF THE 1991 SERVICE MANUAL (PN81-370-1145) FOR FUTURE REFERENCE.


INSTALLATION PROCEDURE

1. Close the jaws on the latch.

2. Push the lock-to-latch rod forward toward the inside release handle.

NOTE: CHECK TO INSURE THE LOCK LEVER ON THE LATCH IS IN THE UNLOCKED POSITION.


3. Position the threaded end of the lock rod over the lock lever clip on the latch and push the rod into the lock lever clip.

NOTE: THE LOCK LEVER SHOULD HAVE A FULL SWEEP OF TRAVEL WHEN ACTIVATED BY THE INSIDE CONTROL BUTTON. IT SHOULD NOT BIND OR BE STIFF.

4. Position the threaded end of the release lever rod over the release lever clip on the latch and push the rod into the release lever clip.

NOTE: THE RELEASE LEVER ON THE LATCH SHOULD BE RESTING AGAINST THE STOP WITH NO PRELOAD AFTER THE ROD IS ENGAGED INTO THE RETAINING CLIP. VISUAL OBSERVATION WILL REVEAL ANY PRELOAD. IF PRELOAD IS NOTED, DISCONNECT THE RELEASE LEVER ROD AND INSTALL IT AGAIN TO ELIMINATE THE PRELOAD.

5. Pull up on the outside handle release rod to position it as far up as possible and push the rod into the release lever clip on the latch.

NOTE: THE RELEASE LEVER ON THE LATCH SHOUID BE RESTING AGAINST THE STOP WITHOUT ANY PRELOAD AFTER THE ROD IS ENGAGED INTO THE CLIP.

6. Close the latch jaws.

7. Activate the inside lock control button. It should not bind or be stiff. if either condition is noted, the latch should be replaced.

8. With the inside lock control button in the unlocked position, pull the inside door handle to open the jaws on the latch and close the door.
