Park Brake - Adjustment Procedure

NO.: 05-09-93

GROUP: Brakes

DATE: May 7, 1993

SUBJECT:
Park Brake Service

MODELS:

1993 (ZJ) Grand Cherokee/Grand Wagoneer
1991-1993 (YJ) Wrangler
1992-1993 (XJ) Cherokee

DISCUSSION:

The parking brake mechanism on the above listed vehicles contain a self-tensioning mechanism which eliminates the need for parking brake adjustment under normal service. The only time a park brake should need adjustment is if a component, such as a cable, is replaced or if other brake service is required. The tensioning system relies on a predetermined torque valve required to bend a metered pin around a pivot. With the park brake applied, the threaded adjuster is tightened until the metered pin bends. At this point the tension on the cables is correct.

REPAIR PROCEDURE:

If park brake adjustment is required or park brake components have been replaced, perform the following procedure:

1. Check the entire rear brake system for wear, incorrectly assembled components or oversized drums.

2. Apply the park brake fully.

3. Raise the vehicle.

4. Mark the metering pin 6.5 mm (1/4 in.) forward of the bracket. See the illustration.

5. Tighten the adjuster nut until the mark lines up with the bracket. (This nut should never be loosened.)

6. Release the park brake and verify that the wheels turn freely.

7. Lower the vehicle.
