NOTE:
THIS BULLETIN SUPERSEDES TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETIN NUMBER 23-49-93 WHICH SHOULD BE REMOVED FROM YOUR FILES.


SYMPTOM/CONDITION:
Tailgate hinges may corrode and bind causing difficult opening and bent hinges.

DIAGNOSIS:

Inspect the hinge for signs of corrosion or misalignment caused by bent hinges. If the condition is present, perform the repair procedure.

4 J4004956 Screw (Body)
4 J4007530 Screw (Tailgate)

REPAIR PROCEDURE:

This bulletin involves replacing the tailgate hinges with cast hinges which are stronger and more corrosion resistant.

1. Clean, prime and paint the new hinges and screw heads to match.
2. Remove the spare tire from the carrier.
3. Remove upper hinge.
4. Install the new upper hinge with the appropriate screws in their locations finger tight and align the hinge.
5. With the tailgate closed, tighten the two screws on the tailgate and the one outer body screw to 35 Nm (26 ft. lbs.).
6. Open the tailgate and tighten the inner body screw to 35 Nm (26 ft. lbs.).
7. Repeat steps 3 through 6 for the lower hinge.
8. Touch up the area around the hinge as necessary to cover any unfinished surface.
